School and Group Use of Libraries

Library resources are provided for the interest, information, and enlightenment of all individuals of the community the Library serves.  In order to make resources equally available to all patrons, the following policy outlines acceptable library use by schools and groups.

The Library is interested in providing programming for schools and groups that matches their special interests and needs.  Presentations are age appropriate and they may include information about library resources, booktalks, library tours, story sharing, and basic instruction on using the computer catalog.

Schools and groups of 8 or more individuals should prearrange visits to the Library at least two weeks in advance.  Calls should be directed to either the Branch Manager in a branch library, to the Central Library Adult Services for ages 13 and older (237-5355), or to the Central Library Children’s Department (237-5355) for ages 12 and younger.

Whether a school or group seeks a special tour, program or simply an opportunity to visit, prearranging the visit is necessary.  In order to meet a primary goal of providing meaningful use of the facility and resources, Library staff must be prepared for group needs and must ensure that the visit will not conflict with other group visits or events.

Because of the high demand for school and group visits throughout the county, the Library is unable to provide regularly scheduled visits for specific groups or schools.  The Library is interested in supporting academic development and in offering curriculum support; however, the Library discourages use of the public library as a replacement for a school library/media center.  Every school should have a library/media center available to support that school’s curriculum and student needs.  Library staff are also available to talk at schools about the Summer Reading Program and other special events as arranged.

When scheduling school/group visits, please plan for one adult per 10 children.  Adults must remain with their groups during the visit to assist in monitoring the group for proper library behavior.  Please refer to Rules for Use of the Wilson County Public Library (posted in the library) for specifics.

Coordination of planning between the Library and school and group leaders will result in the best possible experience for young people.  We value these cooperative efforts in serving the community.
