Wilson County Public Library Offers

“Catch the Reading Bug”

The Wilson County Public Library system is gearing up for its annual program for the summer begins June 16th through July 28th.  This year’s theme “Catch the Reading Bug” will offer four professional programs, local guests, stories, and activities.  The subject should have broad appeal for a wide range of ages.  Children who participate are able to receive weekly incentives and prizes to encourage them to read and to be read to this summer.

This program is completely free to all children who sign up at their local library.  Its purpose is to encourage reading as a leisure activity for the school break.  Children who read during the summer months can return to class at grade level or achieve increased reading skill just by leisure reading for pleasure, but those who do not read show a decline in their reading skills.

“We want children to connect to the joy of reading, free from pressure and testing,” says children’s librarian Rebecca Tighe.  “Freedom of selection is a key feature.  Leisure readers become life long learners – the people who continue to question, adapt, and excel in our fast-paced society.  Let us help you to encourage reading in your home.”

The Main Library at the corner of Nash and Jackson will offer school age programs Monday and Tuesday evenings from 7pm-8pm in the Children’s Department.  Wednesday morning Lap-sit for two and under meets at 9:30am and 3-5 year olds will have Story-time at 10:00am.  Library branch locations (East, Elm, Crocker, Black Creek, and Lucama) are providing afternoon programs at 3:00 pm once a week during the Summer Reading Program.

Librarians will be making trips to present short programs about this year’s theme to school age children throughout the county before school closes.  Keep your eyes open for details in your local paper or call your local library for more information.
